Middle East Takes the Not-so-Middle-Road to Tolerence

A masked man opened fire on a crowd outside a gay club in Tel Aviv, killing two people and wounding 11 others and striking fear into the heart of the liberal Israeli city's homosexual community.

The black-clad gunman unloaded a pistol on the young group of gays and lesbians at the entrance to the centre in the heart of Israel's beachside commercial capital late Saturday and then fled, police and witnesses said.

A teenage girl and a man in his 20s were killed on the spot and three people suffered serious wounds, police said, adding that a manhunt has been launched for the assailant.

"All indications point that this was a criminal incident and not a terror attack, which was most likely deliberately directed against the gay and lesbian community," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP.

Thousands of people gathered in the city centre overnight to protest at the attack, some waving rainbow banners and lighting candles for the victims.

"Our (gay) community won't let itself be frightened, it will stand up to those who threaten it with heads held high and with pride, we will respond to war with war," left-wing opposition Meretz party MP Nitzan Horowitz said.

The victims were identified Liz Tarabushi, 17 and Yaniv Katz, 26.

Police have imposed a complete blackout on details of the inquiry, but investigators were seen sifting through evidence at the scene while bloodied victims were taken by stretcher into ambulances.

Tel Aviv police chief Shahar Ayalon ordered the closure of a nearby gay bar and urged such establishments to remain vigilant.

"We are only at the first stage of the investigation, we continue our search and we are not sure of the motive of this attack since the centre has not received any threats recently," Ayalon said.

If the motive is confirmed, it would be the worst homophobic attack against Israel's gay and lesbian community.

"It is not surprising that such a crime can be committed given the incitement of hatred against the homosexual community," the president of Tel Aviv's gay and lesbian community, Mai Pelem, told reporters.

Pelem was referring to verbal attacks against gays from the religious community in Israel, where homosexuals, particularly men, often encounter hostility from ultra-Orthodox Jews who consider sexuality an "abomination."

In the past, swastikas have been painted at the entrance to the centre in an attempt to stigmatise homosexuals.

"In our worst nightmares we could not have imagined that the hatred against our community, which is hurting nobody, could go this far," the head of Israel's gay and lesbian national association, Mike Hamel, told journalists.

Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch also said he believed the attack had homophobic motives and promised the police would do everything possible to arrest the gunman, military radio reported.

"Tel Aviv-Jaffa has always been a bastion for pluralism, tolerance and openness, Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai said in a statement.

"But no one will manage change the city's character. We will continue to offer the gay community a warm house in our city and fight for everyone's right to live according to his faith and beliefs."

In 2005, an ultra-Orthodox Jew stabbed three participants of the gay pride parade. He was later sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Israel repealed a ban on consensual same-sex sexual acts in 1988 and certain rights of gay or lesbian couples have since been recognised by the courts.

Anti-gay Singapore professor cancels NYU stint after uproar
A Singaporean law professor has pulled out of a teaching stint at New York University after her hardline anti-gay views triggered a backlash on campus, school officials said.

Richard Revesz, dean of New York University's law school, said Thio Li-ann had informed him she would not be teaching during the fall semester because of "controversy surrounding her views regarding homosexuality and gay rights."

"She explained that she was disappointed by what she called the atmosphere of hostility by some members of our community towards her views and by the low enrolments in her classes," he said in a statement seen Friday.

Thio -- a former appointed member of parliament and a current professor at the National University of Singapore, which has an exchange programme with NYU -- could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 41-year-old was due to teach courses on human rights law and constitutionalism in Asia at NYU during the fall semester starting in September.

Singapore's Straits Times said NYU students were outraged after learning that Thio had said in a parliamentary debate in 2007 that repealing a colonial-era law making sex between men a criminal offence "would subvert social morality, the common good and undermine our liberties."

More than 800 members of the NYU community signed a petition against Thio after gay rights activists circulated copies of her speech, it said.

Revesz said he was not aware of the anti-gay speech when NYU made the offer to Thio, and both courses have now been cancelled as a result of her pullout.

In Singapore, sex between men is still a criminal offence punishable by up to two years in prison under a law dating back to British colonial rule, although it is rarely enforced.

Michael Jackson had an 'insatiable' appetite for gay sex, it has been claimed.

The late 'Beat It' singer's unofficial biographer Ian Halperin claims to have spoken to two of the star's male lovers, including an actor named only as Lawrence.

Lawrence told the author: 'He was very shy. But when he started to have sex, he was insatiable.'
According to Halperin -

who makes the allegations in his book 'Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson' - 'virtually everyone' around the singer knew he was gay and he used to meet lovers in a run-down motel dressed as a woman.

One alleged lover said: 'The very first time he had sex with me he said, 'The King of Pop's going to lick your lollipop.' I still laugh thinking about that.'

Jackson moved to Los Angeles in 2007 and barely left his home, except to meet one of his lovers for secret liaisons.

A source told Halperin: 'He met a construction worker and fell madly in love with him. Michael would leave the house in disguise, often dressed as a woman, and would go to meet his boyfriend at a motel that was one of Vegas' grungiest dives. Michael was broke. He struggled to put food on the table for his children. It was all he could afford then.'

Halperin added: 'A close aide of Jackson who confirmed the affair to me said that he had no knowledge of what went on behind closed doors at the motel.

'But the aide said Jackson would dress as a woman after midnight to meet a worker employed by the city of Las Vegas.'

Meanwhile, toxicology tests carried out on the singer's body reportedly showed lethal levels of the painkillers Demerol and heroin substitute Methadone in his system before he died.

Preliminary toxicology reports submitted to the Los Angeles county coroner's office also showed high levels of anti-anxiety drug Xanax, 'significant' amounts of painkiller Dilaudid, lower levels of Propofol - allegedly used by the singer as a sleeping aid - plus 'therapeutic' levels of strong painkillers Fentanyl and Vicodin, anti-anxiety tablet Valium and sleeping drug Ambien.

: 'Michael Jackson was a walking drug store when he died - he never stood a chance.

The body can build up extreme tolerances to huge doses of drugs but eventually it overloads and just shuts down. That is what happened to Michael.'

The levels of drugs in his system were so high, police may turn the enquiry into his death into a manslaughter investigation.

The source added: 'This is sure to increase pressure on police to establish exactly how one man obtained so many prescription medications - and which doctors were responsible.

'There is increasing talk of manslaughter charges if it can be shown he was given drugs without proper regard for his safety.'

Police Chief William Bratton is waiting for the final toxicology reports before deciding whether to pursue an investigation.

He said: 'Based on those, we will have an idea what we are dealing with. Are we dealing with a homicide or are we dealing with accidental overdose?'~ MSN News

An Apple for All

A top Indian court issued a landmark ruling Thursday that decriminalised gay sex between consenting adults by declaring a colonial-era ban on homosexuality unconstitutional.

The decision by the Delhi High Court was hailed by gay activists here as a historic step in their struggle to achieve equal rights in a conservative society that largely regards homosexuality as a taboo illness.

The court ruled that the existing ban on homosexual acts was discriminatory and therefore a violation of individual rights guaranteed by the constitution.

Homosexuality has been illegal in India since 1860 under a statute introduced by British colonial rulers that banned "carnal intercourse against the order of nature." Conviction carried a fine and maximum 10-year jail sentence.

Although prosecutions were rare, gay activists said police used the law to harass and intimidate members of their community.

"We are all very thrilled and happy," said Anjali Gopalan, executive director of the Naz Foundation, a gay advocacy group that had petitioned the court to overturn the statute.

"This is just the beginning. The battle will continue till every member of this community gets all the rights that an ordinary citizen has," Gopalan told reporters.

While the ruling is non-binding outside the Indian capital, it effectively leaves the government with the choice of appealing to the Supreme Court or repealing the law nationwide.

The decision was criticised by religious groups, particularly leaders of India's Muslim and Christian communities, who staunchly opposed the move to legalise gay sex.

"This is absolutely wrong," said Ahmed Bukhari, imam at the Jama Masjid in Delhi, India's largest mosque.

"We will not accept any such law," Bukhari said.

Father Babu Joseph, spokesman for the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, said the court's decision would make no difference to the Church's stand.

"While respecting the judgment of the court, we still hold that homosexuality is not an acceptable behaviour," he said.

In recent years, India's homosexual community has raised its profile, organising gay pride marches in major cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai.

"I feel very proud to be an Indian today," said openly gay fashion designer Wendell Rodericks.

The Indian government has offered mixed messages on the issue, with some ministers speaking out in favour of the petition, only to be contradicted by others in the cabinet.

Law Minister Veerappa Moily declined to offer any immediate comment on Thursday's ruling, telling reporters at parliament that he needed to study the text properly.

Ashok Row Kavi, a prominent gay rights campaigner since the 1970s, told AFP from Bangkok, where he was attending a UN AIDS conference, that the court's decision opened a new era.

"I will return to India as a free gay man... free from extortion, violence and blackmail from the police, free from discrimination and free to access all health services," Kavi said.

The UN AIDS agency had supported the petition, arguing that decriminalising homosexuality would help India combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and encourage those affected by it to come forward and seek treatment and information.

India has an estimated 2.5 million people living with HIV.

Susan Timberlake, head of UNAIDS' human rights and law team, said "We think this will set an important precedence throughout the world."

New York-based Human Rights Watch welcomed the ruling, saying it was overdue.

"This legal remnant of British colonialism has been used to deprive people of their basic rights for too long," said Scott Long, director of the watchdog's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Programme.

"This long-awaited decision testifies to the reach of democracy and rights in India," Long said.

Bollywood actress and gay rights campaigner Celina Jaitley said the ruling was historic.

"I'm overwhelmed," Jaitley told AFP in Mumbai.

"It's great not to be criminalised for being a human being and what you do in your bedroom," she added.

Findings of a study that biologically link sexual orientation and brain function are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to this recent research, there is a similarity between the brains of homosexual males and heterosexual females, thereby suggesting that biology is central to sexual orientation.

With the use of brain scanners, researchers behind this study found similar aspects in the brain circuits concerning the function of language and the area of emotions. They say that homosexual men and heterosexual women both exhibit

‘higher rates of depressive disorders than heterosexual men.’

In a previous neurobiological study, evidence was found regarding the part of the brain linked to sexual behavior as ‘smaller in homosexual men compared to heterosexual men.’

Comparatively, this new and latest study led by Ivanka Savic of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm dealt with the ‘areas of the brain that have nothing to do with sexual behavior, suggesting there was a basic biological link between sexual orientation and a range of brain functions.’

One of the more significant findings of the Savic study is that brain differences between homosexuals and heterosexuals were formed ‘in the womb or infancy, probably as a result of genetic or hormonal factors.’

Here I am, typing from a computer in the lobby of my first hotel I've ever stayed in Phuket, Thailand, Coast Star Resort.

It's more , as my No-L puts it (or rather, bitch, about), a whore house. The type of budget hotel that you'd expect dirty and sexual things happening within its dingy bare-essentials-only rooms.

Anyway, I'm spending almost all waking moment doing my diving course (Yay! I'm getting fully certified this very afternoon, after 3 long exhausting day of relentless training and I've an excellent coach too, Meardach the Merman; I call him. A good looking Irish fella) and shopping and sight-seeing (you won't believe what I' ve been polluting my mind scape with...) , a room is just a place to put the bags down, take a shower and sleep (of which I've been surviving on nothing more that 4-5 hours max for the last 5 days .)

Well, I have to say, that Thailand, or at least Phuket, has impressed me lots. Unparalled hostpitality, amazingly good food, drop dead cheap goods and services ( ahem... you know....) and the generally relaxed way of life (may be because its a resort?) .

Will I be back?

Pride and Prejudice

AIDs and other like-wise diseases, need no introduction.

Education and understanding is necessary.

I have a friend who just 'came out' of the closet if you know what I mean....

And there's no discrimination from me but a ton of R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

B'cos it takes a lot. More than just being brave and having the will. It's about finding yourself. And it's the hardest thing in the world.



Actually, sexuality is not definite but a continuum.
The level of desire as opposed to disdain for the opposite sex varies from person to person (even depending on time and situation!) only serves to exemplify the notion that sexuality should not be an issue in any context.

It is all but a senseless hype meant to be insensitive; showing a lack in understanding and benevolence.

Listen out and nod away:

>Males crave physical gratification.

>Females crave emotional gratification.

What this means is that a really 'handsome gal or a really 'pretty boy' could still whisk a 'straight-as-an-arrow' proclaimer off his/her feet, as long as this person' gratification is met.

In fact, the gratification itself (physical/emotional or both) is a continuum in it self.

So, quit the labelling b'cos we're all humans.


'Needs' are governed by personal norms while 'wants' are governed by social norms (and stigmas) .

So the rule of thumb? Don't discriminate b'cos you'r likely not that 'straight' after all...

I've had a couple (thank goodness not that many!) of mean people passing remarks like

I mean, kudos to all those who 'are all out there and proud of it' ... but I'm just not. And shall not stand others who point fingers and act as if they know me and can size me up.

Neither do I tolerate the discrimination and scoff b'cos I personally know really nice and sweet people who are not straight, yes, but are 10X better individuals then those homophobists out there.

With regards to the 'look-ing good equals mailto:g@y remark stated at the start, I'm neither jaded nor narcissistic to masquerade around thinking myself as looking-good. I am a model and, thus, I get such compliments coming at me all the time so I'm not flighty about it nor do I necessarily wake up in the morning, looking in the mirror and go all " Hey, gorgeous..." (eww!).

Hell, I don't even like taking photographs. I' m the last person you'd expect to see pointing a camera phone at the mirror with me in front of it and clicking away. That's why you'd have to pay me for me to be shot at. Seriously. LOL.

I don't have image issues of course. Wouldn't go plastic surgeon-hunting the minute I can afford it, if you see my point. Neither do I go 'oh-perfect' on myself...

Anyway, back to the gist of the matter, my normal response to those who accuse guys who bother to look smart b'cos they are adamant about walking about campus in flip flops and shorts and hence bother to groom well (for me; both a personal upkeep and a job-necessity) as 'g@y' , EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT.

Happy .... & Less-Happy

You know, there has been increasing hoopla over a small but (at least when compared to the size of the general populace) thriving 'Happy' communitee ... yeah you know wht I mean.

And I made some very interesting discoveries.

Just last night , I chain-clubbed two very popular clubbers'-haunts . First it was at Play . Then it was down to Ministry Of Sound.

At Play, when I was there to catch the musical musings of world-reknowned Grammy Award winning DJ/Remixer Hex Hector, I realised that these men ARE happy. Not in the pun-slanged way mind you...but they trully are ...festive. As awkward as I was being there.... I was seriously feeling light-hearted about the whole atmosphere at the same time. It all seemed... more relaxed...these people were there to have fun and, most importantly, no pretense. As though once the doors are shut behind them, the ruthless world outside is locked out and they are safe there. Totally palpable.

Then, it was down to MOS later in the night . All I saw there were ego-trips. Slut-girls and trannies (or trannys; sorry I'm just trying to make a point here and not trying to provoke or discriminate) trying to out-dress each other by wearing the least and see who had the hook-ups. Shufflers doing their best to out pace each other and to stand out from the crowd. Boyfriends fiercely defending their girlfriends like those girls grew up in boxes and knew nothing about being the wee-bit independent or capable enough to stand on their own. There were simplying more people checking each other out and standing around with drinks in hand doing little more than tapping their feet or bopping their heads. I enjoyed myself little there.

Another thing that stroke me most, was that, other than what's mentioned above,ultimately, the crowd in MOS seemed little different from those at Play. They could well have switched places or to see anyone of those clubbers in the context of their daily lives, and you wouldn't tell the difference.

Yeash, say what ever you like , who ever is reading this, but well, I do have one thing to say :

It was indeed an eye-opener for me. And it only serves to further reinforce my notion and stand that whether a person is straight or not should hardly be an issue in today's context.

Gone with the naysayers and haters out there... ponder this... " If straight people aren't necessarily good people (such as killers, robbers, murderers etc.) , then why should g*y people be seen as bad?"

There is just no basis for let-downs and put-downs.

Enlightened and reassured.

Because men were not created equal but should at least be treated as such. That's justice. That's dignity.
